During my hour-long drive back to Leafy Hollow, I wondered how many other village residents harbored secrets.

To think I’d fallen for that.

And now Gideon was locked up and accused of—what, exactly? Would Nellie oversee his interrogation, or would that task fall to those beefy wrench-carriers we’d tangled with behind the Falls? I hoped they weren’t force-feeding him gravy-drenched poutine. Gideon was not a young man. I didn’t think his arteries could take it.

Meanwhile, I was conflicted. Of course I wanted to help my country thwart an attack on Niagara Falls. But I didn’t believe Gideon was an informant. What did that make me in Nellie’s eyes? An enabler? Or an accomplice?

I recalled her warning.

Needed for what? What could I do? I knew nothing about “black-ops marketing.” If that was even a thing.

A loud tick-tick-tick coming from my purse snapped me out of my reverie. I slipped the phone from my bag and glanced at it. A clock was counting down from 68:10.

Sixty-eight hours and ten minutes.

Tick.

68:09.

Tick.

I recalled Control’s parting words. We’ll be in tooooouch…

With a wave of irritation, I muted the countdown and tossed the phone onto the seat beside me.
